Russia or the Russian Federation is a country that spans much of eastern Europe and northern Asia. Russia, once the preeminent republic of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or U.S.S.R. (colloquially known as the Soviet Union), became an independent country after the Soviet Union disintegrated in December 1991. Russia is a land of extremes. By far it is the world’s largest country, it spans the entirety of northern Asia and the eastern third of Europe, spanning 11 time zones and encompassing a diverse range of environments and landforms. Currently, it is being led by the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
